Casement

Casement windows have hinges located on one side of the window unit.  The window opens out via the hinge.  Casement windows usually have a tighter seal than sliding windows and so they don’t leak as much cold/warm air into and out of the house as standard sliding windows.  Screens are installed on the interior of casement windows.

DoubleHung

Double hung windows have the windows sliding vertically within rails to open.  Screens can be installed on the interior or the exterior for Doublehung window units.

Bay

Bay window units are made with three windows that protrude out from the wall.  The middle window is parallel to the wall and the two outer windows are angled back towards the wall.  Bay windows are generally found in homes on the east coast and are usually located above windows or doors.

Bow

Bow window units are similar to bay window units but they have more than three windows.  The windows connect together to form a semi circle or arc.

Awning

Awning window units are like casement windows but the hinges are on top.  The window still opens outward via the hinges and the screen is installed on the interior.

Skylight

Skylight windows are installed in the ceiling and are flush or parallel with the ceiling.  They are usually installed to provide additional sunlight into the house but some also open to provide ventilation as well.

Fixed

Fixed window units do not open.  They are usually installed to provide sunlight into the house but they do not provide added ventilation like the other window types.
