  1. Natural Attic Ventilation System: Ventilating an attic has two advantages. In the summer, heat is released from the attic, keeping the house cooler and reducing energy costs is air conditioning is used. The other reason is that ventilating an attic prevents moisture build-up, preventing wear and damage to your roof and attic. Natural attic ventilation system use gravity ventilators, wind assisted ventilators, or both in combination. These methods do not cost anything, and are produced through naturally occuring processes.
  2. Attic Fans: The other method of ventilating an attic is using an attic fan. The results are the same as using natural attic ventilation systems, but the advantage is that the home owner has more control over the ventilation process when an electric fan is installed. For instance, wind assisted ventilators do not work if there is no wind. An attic fan works whenever you press the on switch.
  3. Skylights: A skylight can bring a lot of light into a dark room. Skylights come in two types: sealed or venting. Sealed to no open, while vented skylights open to let air as well as light into your room. If you are installing a new roof, it is less expensive and more effective to install a skylight now, than if you were to add a skylight to an existing roof.
  4. Roof Decks: In 1963, the Drifters released the now classic song Up On the Roof. Well, if you've got a flat space on your roof, safe access to it, and want to hang out in style, you might want to consider adding a roof deck while you are installing your new roof.
